In refreshing contrast to mainstream American radio, NPR is a national network of radio stations supported not by commercial advertising sales, but by a combination of government and foundation grants, and private donations. The relative freedom from corporate pressures, advertisers demands and profit evaluations has allowed these stations to create programming for a variety of interests not served by other stations. Particularly notable is NPR's news programming, identified by such professionals as Ted Koppel (host of ABC's Nightline) as the highest quality, most objective and best produced coverage by any American broadcast source. NPR's musical and educational programming is considered a a relief for some from the crass DJ commentary, and shock talk stations that dominate America's radio waves.
